IELTS Listening: Flow-chart Completion

Flow-chart questions test how well you can follow a process or sequence in the listening audio.
You’ll hear steps, actions, and results — and your job is to fill in the blanks correctly.

1️⃣ Don’t start by analysing the options

If the question gives you options (A–H), don’t waste time comparing them before listening.
Instead, focus on the flow-chart itself — it tells you the story.
Once you understand the process, the correct options will fit naturally when you listen.

2️⃣ Preview the questions carefully

Before the recording starts, read each sentence and understand what’s happening in each step.
Notice key verbs like select, measure, record, decide, or label.
These words show you what kind of information is missing.

3️⃣ Predict the type of answer for each gap

Think about what kind of word could fill the blank — a noun (object, material), an adjective (quality), or a measurement (time, weight, height).
For example:
“Decide on the _____ to be used” → probably a material or substance.

4️⃣ Listen for sequence markers

Flow-chart questions follow a clear order.
Watch for transition phrases like:

first, next, then, after that, finally, after three weeks, etc.
Each of these usually signals a new blank or stage.

5️⃣ Focus on meaning, not exact words

IELTS rarely repeats the same words from the question.
Listen for synonyms or paraphrased expressions that match the meaning.
Example:
“Different kinds of seeds” might become “various types of seeds” in the audio.

6️⃣ Don’t panic if you miss one answer

The steps come in order, so just move on to the next blank.
If you stay stuck on one question, you’ll lose the next two.
Keep your eyes moving with the flow.

7️⃣ Check logic and grammar

After the recording, quickly review your answers.
Make sure each word fits grammatically and makes sense in the process.
If the sentence sounds wrong when you read it aloud, your answer probably is too.

Summary

  • Don’t overthink the options.
  • Preview and predict before listening.
  • Follow the sequence words.
  • Listen for meaning, not matching.
  • Keep calm and move with the flow.

That’s how you handle IELTS Listening flow-charts like a pro — logically, step by step.
